ROLE OF DRAINS AFTER A TUMMY TUCK

TUMMY TUCK SURGERYOne of the most popular plastic surgery procedures is the tummy tuck. We use it to remodel the lower and middle abdomen and remove the extra skin and fat that can be a result of weight loss or pregnancy. The tummy tuck is a procedure recommended to both men and women who have sagging skin or muscles on the abdomen.

What Happens after the Tummy Tuck Procedure?

As soon as the tummy tuck procedure is over, you will have to wear elastic bandages or a corset to speed and help the healing process. The corset will be required for about six weeks. Also, for a few days after the surgery, usually three to seven days, there will be a few thin drain tubes to eliminate the fluids that naturally accumulate where the surgery was performed. The pain after the procedure is moderate in intensity, and it will be controlled with medication. Sometimes a slight pain can persist for a few weeks due to small nerves affected during the surgery, but it usually disappears in two to three weeks. In some cases, the doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics to prevent infection and anticoagulants to prevent thrombotic complications.

What Is the Purpose of the Drains after a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

For approximately seven days or less, you will have one or two extremely thin drain tubes inserted to eliminate the liquids that accumulate in the body after the surgery. The drains will prevent seroma (a collection of fluids that creates a pocket beneath the surface of the skin). It is not at all unusual for a seroma to form after surgery, and without the use of drains it is almost a certainty. Seromas need to be surgically removed, so the role of the drains after the tummy tuck procedure is to prevent this.

The forming of seromas after tummy tuck procedures continues to be a frustrating issue for both doctors and patients. Over time, researchers have found that seromas are more likely when the patient suffers from obesity. However, these fluids between the skin and the abdominal wall can be easily removed using drains. This is why the drains are mandatory after a tummy tuck procedure. There is no pain or significant discomfort associated with the drains, and patients have not complained about any issues or complications related to them.

Doing your best to follow the doctor’s hygiene recommendations is a must for any tummy tuck patient, as well as giving the body time to recover after the surgery. It is also recommended that you spend the first two weeks at home to avoid physical effort, and during the next six weeks, resume your daily activities step by step while still avoiding challenging activities.

TUMMY TUCK There are different types of tummy tuck depending on the amount of excessive skin and degree of muscle weakness you have. During an hourglass tummy tuck, the abdominal wall is tightened and the excess skin is removed; liposuction is also performed and fat transfer is done on the hips. Every single patient who comes to my practice wants to have a tummy tuck with a 2 cm incision. This is absolutely not possible. The amount of excess skin you have will determine how long your scar is going to be. Patients have this perception that anybody can have a mini tummy tuck or a modified tummy tuck to improve their abdomen, but this is not true. For most patients the scar goes from hip to hip, but in certain situations, like patients who have lost a lot of skin or patients who have gained too much weight and have stretch marks all the way to the flank and beyond, the scar needs to be extended toward the back and sometimes toward the midline on the back. For the most part, it just goes posteriorly for about 8 to 10 cm. This is what is called an extended tummy tuck: where the scar goes past the hips and toward the back. This is necessary because if you do not excise the excess skin, you are going to develop bunching and puckering of the skin on the sides, leaving you with an unsatisfactory outcome. You need to be realistic about what a tummy tuck can do for you.

In the event that you need to have an extended tummy tuck, you need to let the surgeon do his job, because if you try to minimize the scar, your results are not going to be as good and you are going to have excessive skin in these areas. During your consultation, I will assess the amount of excess skin that you are going to have, and based on experience, I can tell you before surgery where to expect the location of the scar and how long the scar is going to be. If you are not willing to accept the necessary steps to recreate your hourglass shape, including a longer scar, I prefer not to do your surgery.

OBESITY AND TUMMY TUCK We have previously discussed how the risk of surgical complications increases steadily with a body mass index (BMI) above 35. It is very important to be within a normal weight prior to surgery to help prevent complications like seroma, infection, and slow wound healing, among other things. When a tummy tuck is performed, a lower abdominal incision is done and then dissection is continued toward the midline; the abdominal wall is tightened, the excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed with multiple-layer sutures. What is the importance of losing weight before this surgery? Well, when the lower abdominal incision is performed, the blood supply to the abdomen comes from the top. Before surgery, there is a dual blood supply coming from the bottom and the top, but after the incision is performed, the blood supply that comes from the bottom part is essentially compromised. When patients are overweight, perfusion is diminished. This is why an overweight patient who has a tummy tuck has a higher chance of slow wound healing.

Another consideration is the belly button. When somebody has gained weight, the belly button is elongated; because it is attached to the abdominal wall, it actually gets longer the more fat you have in your abdomen. This can cause problems with wound healing. If you look at this diagram, the cylinder is the belly button, which extends from the level of the skin to the level of the abdominal wall. If you gain weight, the belly button gets much longer. When a tummy tuck is performed and the belly button is detached, the longer the belly button, the less blood will reach the end of the belly button. This is why there is a higher risk of losing the belly button and having wound healing problems around it when you are overweight. The important thing to understand is that because the belly button itself is a scar from birth, wounds around it are not going to heal very well.

The bottom line is that before any cosmetic surgery, you need to understand that having a weight within the normal range is important to avoid wound healing problems around the belly button or in any area where an incision is made.

liposuctionLiposuction is quite a common surgical procedure that has a short recovery time in most cases.Just like with any other kind of surgery, it is important to understand that there are no hard rules as to when one will be completely recovered. Each patient may have different recommendations from the doctor as to when he or she can return to work or start exercising again, depending on age, weight, and general health condition.

Are you wondering what you can expect after liposuction?

A better-defined body, a more balanced and harmonious silhouette, and also the emotional well-being that comes with an improved appearance. When considering these, it might seem superfluous to discuss the pain, bruising, and swelling that occur during the recovery period, but it is important to know exactly what to expect after liposuction so you can mentally prepare before the procedure.

The recovery process after liposuction will require time and patience; the results will be visible in about three to six months. Most patients can resume their daily activity within a couple of days or weeks after the liposuction. Swelling and bruising are natural effects of the surgery, and they will disappear in the course of two to four weeks for some patients, while for other individuals it might take up to six months to get rid of all the swelling. Some patients experience numbness in the area where the liposuction was performed, and while it is unpleasant, it is not painful.

While some report pain after they recover from the anesthetic, medication is prescribed to control it. The pain felt is different from individual to individual and depends on how each body adjusts to the procedure. For some, it is easily manageable and barely there, while others who have a lower resistance to pain will feel it more prominently. But, as we have mentioned, it is easily controlled with medication.

It is essential for the patient to follow the recommendations of the doctor. Not allowing the body to recover before starting exercise or resuming an active lifestyle can lead to painful episodes. Also, not wearing the girdle (if recommended) may cause some level of pain that can otherwise be avoided. To avoid unnecessary pain and to speed the healing process, it is recommended that you avoid long baths, alcoholic drinks, and smoking for at least seven days after the surgery.

In short, we can say that while discomfort can be felt after the procedure is performed, it is rare that the pain is difficult to cope with. It is also important to remember that the pain (when it occurs) is short-lived. Using Arnica Montana supplements and creams can help reduce the swelling faster.
