Abdominal Wall Surgery

Abdominal Wall SurgeryIf a doctor finds defects in a patient’s abdominal wall, there may be a need for it to be reconstructed. There are a variety of abdominal wall surgeries that can be done, but it is mostly dependent on the patient’s particular defect. The aim of abdominal wall surgery aim is to ensure that they rectify the structure and functionality of the abdominal wall.

One of the common abdominal wall defects that require surgical intervention is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles. This condition is quite common amongst pregnant women. It occurs as a result of the baby’s growth in the womb, and the rectus abdominis separates in order to accommodate a large fetus. Although it is not considered as a medical condition, it can still cause back pain and abdominal pain.

The separation of the rectus abdominis muscle is called diastasis recti, and not all women who experience this undergo surgery. Women who desire a flatter stomach may opt to rectify it through surgery where the muscles are tightened together, returning it to a flatter and stronger abdomen. This procedure can be done in conjunction with a tummy tuck procedure. Through this, excess fat and skin are removed while the muscles are simultaneously repaired. This creates the appearance of a flat stomach.

Other patients who need an abdominal wall surgery may not have diastasis recti but might have a hernia instead. A hernia is a protrusion caused by an internal organ pressed against the abdominal wall. The bulge can be flattened while in a supine position or when pressure is given towards it. The hernia doesn’t go away on its own and can worsen over time.

In order to treat the hernia, it must first diagnosed and evaluated by medical professionals. Certain tests such as CT scans can help identify the location and presence of a hernia. An abdominal wall procedure can treat the hernia. For some, one surgery would be enough to treat it, but there are others whose hernia returns after some time has elapsed. If the hernia is surgically treated multiple times and it still persists, it will then be classified as a complex type of hernia. It is best to find an experienced and professional surgeon to perform the repair to maximize the chances of a successful procedure.

No matter the abdominal wall defect, the abdominal wall surgery can help repair it. Before the surgical procedure, patients are assessed to ensure that they are healthy enough for the surgery. After the surgery, patients need to make sure that they treat their body well and provide it with nutrients to help aid in their recovery. The abdominal wall repair can be used to treat medical conditions like hernia or more cosmetic conditions such as diastasis recti. Either way, this procedure can improve the patient’s self-esteem regarding their body.

liposuction in the mons areaI perform hundreds of tummy tuck revisions a year, and one of the main concerns I see from patients is about insufficient liposuction of the mons area. What is the mons? The mons essentially is the FUPA, the fat that accumulates above the vagina when you gain weight after pregnancy or for any reason. The problem is that the tummy tuck will give you a very flat abdomen, but the mons is not part of the abdomen, but a surrounding aesthetic unit. When you have a tummy tuck, your belly is going to be flat and your waist will be much smaller with liposuction, but without liposuction of the mons, you are going to have a significant bulge around the genitalia area. So, when you wear jeans or a bikini, there will be a bulge that is aesthetically not pleasant.

Performing a liposuction of the mons is essential to get a good tummy tuck result and also to improve your satisfaction after the surgery.

WHAT IS DIASTASIS RECTI The hourglass tummy tuck is the only tummy tuck technique that will give you not just a flat abdomen, but an hourglass shape. It is a combination of three different procedures:

  1.   A traditional tummy tuck.
  2.   Liposuction of the abdomen, flank, sides, and back.
  3.   Fat transfer to the hips.

Studies have shown that about 8% of women have an hourglass shape. This means that the ratio between the waist and hip area is more than 0.7. Most patients require different surgical interventions to recreate the hourglass figure. During this procedure, I perform all the techniques of a traditional tummy tuck: cutting the excess skin and tightening the abdominal wall. I also perform liposuction on the back, abdomen, flanks, and sides, and transfer the fat collected from all of these different anatomical areas into the hips. The fat is processed and placed in syringes, and then, using a 3 mm injection cannula, it is injected in the hip area in multiple passes. This process requires a lot of experience and technique. There is not a lot of space for mistakes, because the anatomical area is small and the amount of fat that you can put in is limited by the space itself. By changing the proportion of the hip area, you can have a better result. Performing a fat transfer to the hips is a must for the hourglass tummy tuck technique. By applying these steps and creating a better hip-to-waist ratio, you are going to have a nicer result and your satisfaction will improve significantly.

The tummy tuck is a surgical procedure where the doctor removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower areas of your abdomen. This method can significantly improve the look of your tummy by eliminating the obnoxious wrinkled shutterstock_25671454skin that sometimes appears as a result of a serious weight loss program or after pregnancy. Your tummy will look firmer and tighter, not to mention that some stretch marks may also be eliminated in the process. However, the tummy tuck procedure is not meant to get rid of all the stretch marks on your abdomen. Depending on the position of the stretch marks, some will be removed with the excess skin, but others will remain where they are.

The procedure is recommended to both men and women who have extra skin on the abdomen and find it difficult or impossible to get rid of it through dieting or exercising. Also, it is a procedure that appeals to many women who have just given birth and are left with what can look like a pouch of fat at the stomach level.

Just like with any plastic surgery procedure, setting up realistic expectations is vital to the success of the operation. You need to know that after the surgery, for about a month, you will need to wear an elastic belt, and physical effort should be avoided at all costs. For a few days after the procedure, your abdomen may be swollen, and numbness and bruises can occur. Medication can and will be prescribed to control the discomfort, pain, and weakness. In three to six months, the scars will become less and less visible, and while they will never completely disappear, it will be tough to see them in a year’s time; you will probably need a magnifier.

If you want to have this procedure done in preparation for a significant event in your life (your wedding day, for example), you will need to take into consideration that the estimated results will be visible in about four months’ time: no sooner. Also, for a while after the surgery you may find it difficult to resume your daily activities at the same intensity; you will be recovering from abdominal surgery, after all.

When discussing your expectations with the doctor, it is important to tell him all the special conditions you might face. For example, taking care of an infant with no help around can be quite difficult, if not impossible, immediately after the tummy tuck procedure. Your doctor will paint a very realistic picture of what to expect after the tummy tuck surgery. While your abdomen will definitely look much better and you will fit into clothes that you never dreamt of before the surgery, it won’t bring back your body from before the pregnancy or before you started putting on weight. There are changes your body went through that make it difficult for it to jump back to the previous shape instantly. But a tummy tuck combined with exercise and a proper diet can lead to an even better-looking body in time!

The tummy tuck is a great method to tighten the abdominal muscles and eliminate excess skin and fat from the bellyshutterstock_294597116 so that it becomes even and toned. Like every surgery, the tummy tuck has its own downsides, with scarring on the abdomen being one of the prominent ones. If you have zero tolerance for scarring, you might want to rethink your decision to undergo a tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy tuck candidates may be concerned about the appearance of scars after the procedure, but it is important to understand that if the procedure is performed by a highly qualified, experienced, and skilled plastic surgeon, the visibility of the scars can be reduced. A proficient plastic surgeon will place the tummy tuck incisions carefully, so they are less visible.

The appearance of scars after the tummy tuck also depends on the methods your plastic surgeon uses. Your surgeon can take some solid steps to make certain that the scars are perfectly placed and thin, so that even when you wear a bikini, the scars will not be noticeable.

Full tummy tuck scarring

When it comes to a full tummy tuck, the incision normally starts from one hipbone and ends on the other hipbone, and so does the scar. The incision can either be in a U-cut or V-cut outline, so the scarring is concealed in a bikini. Your plastic surgeon will decide on the shape and extent of the incision based on your expectations and the extent of improvement required. Your surgeon may make the incisions with great care, but it is important for you to discuss it with the surgeon before the surgery. You must know where the incisions will be placed and how the scarring will appear.

Mini tummy tuck scarring

In the mini tummy tuck, your plastic surgeon can place the scars as low as feasible; they can be concealed in the pubic bone region. This procedure removes extra skin from the abdomen below the belly button area, and no incision is made around the belly button. The extent of a mini tummy tuck scar depends on the amount of skin your plastic surgeon removes from the area.

Remember, scars are more prominent, longer, and higher in the case of a full tummy tuck than in a mini tummy tuck. However, you can easily conceal any of them with underwear or a bikini. If you have already undergone a C-section, the new scars may be fused into the existing scars.

It is important to understand that tummy tuck scars may require more than 12 months to diminish as much as possible. Your plastic surgeon may try to make the incisions as carefully as possible, but there’s no assurance. It is important to follow your surgeon’s guidelines religiously to have the best chance of a successful tummy tuck surgery with minimal scarring.

#HASHTAGS:

#drhourglass, #drcortes, #superhourglass, #bootyman, #starbodies, #wonderbreasts, #bestplasticsurgeon,

One of the common procedures that I perform is to create an hourglass shape. During this procedure, it is crucial to diminish your waistline as much as possible, but there are anatomical limitations. You need to understand that how much your waist is going to decrease shutterstock_401336872in size will depend on your anatomy. Some patients bring pictures of other patients who have very small waists and request the same waist size, but this may not be possible.

To understand why not everybody can get an extremely small waist, you need to have a clear idea of the anatomy of the abdominal wall. The abdominal wall is made up of muscle and the fascia that surrounds the muscle. On top of this muscle, there is subcutaneous tissue—in other words, the fat. When I perform the surgery, I do liposuction to diminish the thickness of this layer. When we reach the abdominal wall, it is like hitting a wall. You are not going to be able to suck the muscle out, so once we reach the abdominal wall, that is how small your waist is going to get.

However, we can certainly do other things to diminish your abdomen further, particularly in patients who have had babies. Suturing the abdominal wall at the midline to correct abdominal wall weakness essentially recreates and diminishes the waistline, by tightening the muscle and pulling the sides of the abdominal walls toward the midline. Let’s go back to the diagram; if we suture your abdominal wall, the transverse dimension of your abdomen will decrease.

By understanding your anatomy, the surgeon can determine before surgery how small your waist is going to be. You cannot pick and choose the waist size that you desire. The only thing the surgeon can do is make your waist as small as possible based on your anatomy and other factors.

bodyThe abdominal area takes the majority of the physical toll during pregnancy and childbirth. Here are the most common abdominal concerns for women following childbirth:

Stretch marks

Stretch marks can be attributed to two main factors – the surge of hormones that causes hyperpigmentation and the growing baby that rapidly stretches the abdominal skin. The sudden expansion makes it difficult for the collagen fibers in the skin to regenerate creating the appearance of cracks. The degree or extent of stretch marks may be influenced by genetics and the elasticity of your skin pre-pregnancy.

Loose abdominal skin

If you’re lucky, the overly stretched abdominal skin may return to its original state after childbirth. However, this isn’t the case for most women as they often end up with loose skin and separated or weakened abdominal muscles.

Abdominal pooch, bulges, or rolls

Weight gain during pregnancy and childbirth may result in the unsightly appearance of love handles, muffin top, and back rolls. These extra pockets of fat may be resistant to diet and exercise, requiring the intervention of cosmetic surgery.

The solution

The aforementioned post-childbirth problems can be remedied with a single treatment – the tummy tuck. Also known as abdominoplasty, this body contouring procedure aims to improve the appearance of the abdomen following pregnancy and make it appear naturally flatter and well-toned.

A thorough physical examination and an in-depth discussion of your goals and expectations are one of the initial steps to take when thinking about having a post-childbirth tummy tuck. Call us at 713.234.6244 to schedule your tummy tuck consultation. We look forward to your visit!

body-fat-transferThe conventional tummy tuck has been around for decades and has transformed millions of lives across the world. For so many people, it can take little more than a much-needed trim around the waist to instill the kind of life-changing confidence it would otherwise be impossible to come by. What’s more, a tummy tuck is one of the few cosmetic procedures that, with the correct care and attitude prior to surgery, can remain beautifully effective for life.

However, there’s a newcomer to the world of advanced cosmetic surgery that’s making significant waves and transforming even more lives. Here at Hourglass Tummy Tuck, we specialize in a slightly modified form of the conventional tummy tuck – one that goes far beyond the conventional. The way we see it, it’s all well and good to lose a few inches around the waist and tidy up that excess skin, but this doesn’t necessarily leave you with the shape you’ve always dreamed of. With the Hourglass Tummy Tuck, however, things are quite different as we take a tummy tuck one step further to deliver an outstanding shape.

This is accomplished by using some of the excess fat from the waist to shape the hips, which results in the stunningly gorgeous curves you may have only dreamed of. For so many women, standard tummy tucks can be rather disappointing because while their waistline may shrink as requested, they’re still left without real definition. By contrast, our Hourglass Tummy Tuck is all about the total package, which is precisely why it stands out as the 21st century approach to transforming your waistline.

Cosmetic surgery is stepping into new territory as advancements in the field accelerate by the day. Here at Hourglass Tummy Tuck, we don’t just embrace the changes; we’re on the very front line of innovation.

A flatter and firmer midsection is a common aesthetic goal for majority of men and women who seek Dr. Cortes’expertise here at our Houston body contouring surgery practice. By and large, their cosmetic options can be narrowed down to two procedures — a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty and liposuction.

Both procedures have their own set of sub-types  depending on the techniques used in surgery. In the case of tummy tuck, there could be a variation in the type and location of incisions as well. Nevertheless, both tummy tuck and liposuction have the same end goal in mind — improve the appearance of one’s abdominal area and make it appear naturally proportional to the rest of your body.

When to Choose Liposuction

Generally, liposuction is the ideal body contouring procedure for you if have a hard time getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat in the abdominal area. Majority of our patients who have greatly benefited from liposuction are those who have done almost everything to improve their abdominal contours through diet and exercise.

In addition, liposuction can also be done to other areas of the body with excess pockets of fat such as the arms, chin, neck, sides (love handles, anyone?), butt, and legs. In some cases, one can even have the option to use their extra fat to augment their breasts or buttocks.

It is important to note that liposuction will not help you eliminate stretch marks and extra skin tissues. Neither will it improve the appearance of loose abdominal muscles. For the aforementioned concerns, a tummy tuck may be done in conjunction with liposuction.

When to Choose Tummy Tuck

Simply put, a tummy tuck is your best bet if your concerns has to do with sagging abdominal skin and loose abdominal muscles. The procedure per se involves an incision made in the lower abdominal region which allows Dr. Cortes to lift slack muscles and remove excess skin. The remaining skin will then be re-draped for a well-contoured and aesthetically balanced midsection.

Making the Decision

When making the decision between a tummy tuck and liposuction, one of the key factors to consider is which specific issues are actually bothering you. For some of our patients, a combination of both may be more helpful than just choosing one of the two procedures.

Recovery from a tummy tuck here at our Houston body contouring surgery practice is all about supporting your body to heal optimally while avoiding complications at the same time. During initial consultations with Dr. Cortes, one of the most common concerns of men and women who want to have a tummy tuck is how recovery would be like, particularly during the first week following surgery.

Bed Rest

You should spend most of your time following recovery in your bed. It is very important that you keep the head of the bed elevated with several pillow underneath your slightly bent knees. This position will help you heal optimally by expanding your lungs (reducing your chances of pneumonia and other respiratory complications) and relaxing abdominal skin which was overly stretched during wound closure.

You are to maintain this position for the first 5 to 7 days following surgery. Walking should be limited and should only be done when necessary such as when you’re about to head to the bathroom or to the refrigerator. Too much movement on your end will most likely lead to hematoma (pooling of blood) or seroma (pooling of fluids).

Diet

You can resume eating your normal diet as tolerated. It should be noted that you are to increase your fluid intake during the first 72 hours. Avoid sodas and energy drinks and focus on fluids that are the least processed such as broths, fruit juices, and of course, water.

Hygiene

Do not take showers during the first 5 to 7 days as you are to make sure that the compression garment stays dry. You can take sponge baths instead and can resume taking a full bath once the compression garment has been removed. In addition, make sure that you have someone to support you on your way to the bathroom.

Drains

Drains are put in place to collect fluid that accumulate in the wound area. It should be regularly emptied when full and the amount of fluid removed should be recorded every time it is emptied. You will be instructed as to when to visit our office for removal.

Compression Garments

Compression garments are put in place to reduce swelling and prevent seromas (fluid accumulations). They are not to be removed during the first 5 to 7 days following surgery and should be worn 24/7.

Pain Medications

Take pain medications as needed.
