Is General Anesthetic Required for Liposuction?

The use of an anesthetic during a liposuction procedure is essential in making the surgery run more smoothly. It helps make sure that the patient does not feel the pain so that he/she can keep still while the surgeon shapes his/her body. The natural reaction of the body is also lessened when under anesthesia, which makes it easier for the surgeon to remove the fat from various areas. The anesthesia used in the liposuction procedure varies depending on the technique used and the area worked on.

There are different kinds of anesthesia available today, but not all of them can be used for the liposuction procedure. Only the general anesthesia and local anesthesia are more commonly used today. The type of anesthesia used will depend on what the surgeon prefers to use, the technique the surgeon uses, and the area in the body where the liposuction procedure is done.

The use of general anesthetic is not a requirement for liposuction. In fact, there are some liposuction techniques that don’t make use of general anesthesia but are still very successful. The general anesthesia is usually used with the traditional liposuction technique. It is preferred when there is a really large area to work on, and much fat is to be removed. This is because a bigger cannula can be used while the patient is asleep. This means that more fat at a time can be sucked out of the body. It is also used when the liposuction procedure is done with other surgical procedures. When it is used, the patient will be completely asleep and unaware of what is happening during the surgery. Many people are not very comfortable in being under general anesthesia because it is risky. Allergic reactions may arise because of it, and some could even be fatal.

Local anesthesia is usually used when the area to be liposuctioned is just small. In the tumescent technique for liposuction, local anesthesia, along with lidocaine, is used to numb the area. Moreover, the solution helps constrict the capillaries in the area to prevent too much bleeding and swelling. Coupled with the local anesthesia, a sedative will also be used intravenously to make the patient very relaxed but still awake. Many surgeons and patients prefer the tumescent technique of liposuction because the patient is awake during the procedure.

The use of local anesthesia is preferred nowadays because of fewer side effects. When general anesthesia is used, you can expect to feel drowsy after you wake up from the surgery. Although this side effect may seem unpleasant, it usually subsides in a couple of hours. On the other hand, the use of local anesthesia enables the patient to be more capable of returning to his/her usual activities. It is possible for patients who had undergone liposuction with local anesthesia to be sent home within the same day of the operation.

If the use of general anesthesia is the main concern for you, you should talk about it with the surgeon you are working with. If you had previous issues with the general anesthesia, then you should inform your surgeon about it so that he/she can prevent using it again on you. A negative reaction to general anesthesia signifies that a patient is allergic to it; using it again could be fatal.
