CORRECTION OF DIATHESIS RECTI

Today I am going to talk about the muscle weakness that occur after pregnancies and is called diastasis recti. It is important for you to understand the reason for the muscle weakness that occur after pregnancy and why is important to repair this pathology during a tummy tuck. During pregnancy the slowly expanding uterus slowly stretches the abdominal musculature including the fibrous tissue. The recti muscles are a pair of muscles that expands from the lower chest all the way to the pelvic. There is fibrous tissue between these two muscles. Now this fibrous tissue also stretches during pregnancy but many times it does not return to its previous form creating a weakness in the abdominal wall. This is the reason why after pregnancy even if you do exercise you may still have a weakness of the abdominal wall. This is because the problem is not be actual muscle per se but the tissue between the muscles and exercise will not fix this problem.

During a tummy tuck the muscles are sutured together in the midline to restore them to their previous anatomical position. These allow pushing the abdominal context in, decreasing your abdominal weakness, decreasing the size of your waistline and provide you with a better result. The repair is done from the lower chest all the way to the pelvic

I hope you have understand what diastasis recti means and why is important to repair this during a tummy tuck.
