Factors that influence the recovery time after the tummy tuck

The tummy tuck is a complex plastic surgery procedure that entails significant incisions, especially if the amount of skin tissue to be removed is considerable. This means that after the procedure, the patient will require some time to recover from the surgical trauma before resuming daily activities and work. While the recovery period is no longer than two weeks for most patients, there are factors that influence the recovery time. Here are some of them:

Smoking

Smoking is bad in general. There is no debate about this, but when patients smoke before and after plastic surgery, especially a procedure such as a tummy tuck, they expose themselves to numerous risks. The recovery time after the tummy tuck can be prolonged in case the patients smoke after the surgery. The healing of the wounds and the tissues takes much longer due to the lack of proper oxygenation, and complications such as skin necrosis or wound opening can occur because of smoking. Patients are advised to avoid smoking for a minimum of three weeks before and after the tummy tuck.

Wearing compression garments

Many patients fail to understand the need to wear compression garments or the girdle after the tummy tuck. It is true that the compression garments can add a bit to the general discomfort that is associated with the beginning of the recovery period, but there are numerous benefits associated with this. The compression garments are recommended to reduce the recovery time by reducing the swelling that naturally occurs after the tummy tuck and also the pain that can be experienced during the first-week post-op.

Diet

Having a strict diet low in calories can also influence the recovery time after the tummy tuck. It is true that some patients might find it difficult to find their appetite after the procedure especially during the first few days; however, it is important to keep a healthy and balanced eating regimen with plenty of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins. The healing process depends on the diet as a body that is deprived of necessary nutrients will take much longer to recover after the surgical trauma. Keep in mind that it is also recommended to avoid strict diets in the month before the procedure as well.

Physical exercise

After the tummy tuck, the medical staff will ask and help you get off the bed as soon as possible to take a few steps around the room. Getting off the bed and walking around the room for a few minutes every few hours is essential for your speedy recovery and can also help you avoid unwanted complications such as deep vein thrombosis. However, engaging in activities that are too demanding can result in a longer recovery time. Make sure to resume your daily activities gradually and consult with the surgeon before resuming physical activities.
