How long do patients stay in recovery after abdominoplasty?

Also known as the tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is the medical term we use for the very popular procedure that aims to correct the saggy skin on the tummy. The tummy tuck is recommended for patients with lax skin on the lower part of the tummy which can also be confronted with issues such as loose abdominal muscles, fat deposits on the tummy and flanks, and umbilical hernia.

There are different types of tummy tucks, depending on the physical characteristics of the patient and her aesthetic goals. The least invasive of the procedures is the mini tummy tuck which entails an incision on the lower part of the tummy on the suprapubic area to remove the excess skin. The next procedure in terms of complexity is the traditional tummy tuck. In this case, the incision can go from one hip bone to the other and a second incision is often required for the repositioning of the navel. The plastic surgeon can correct loose abdominal muscles and umbilical hernia when this procedure is performed. A procedure a bit more complex is the extended tummy tuck, which entails incisions on the flanks as well. The procedure is recommended for patients with considerable sagginess on the flanks that can’t be corrected when the traditional tummy tuck is performed due to the location of the incision in the suprapubic area.

A more modern procedure that aims to deliver impressive results on the whole body and not just the tummy is the hourglass tummy tuck. When the hourglass tummy tuck is recommended, most often the patient has unwanted adipose tissue on the flanks, small hips, and saggy skin on the abdominal wall. When the hourglass tummy tuck is performed, the plastic surgeon will combine multiple plastic surgery techniques such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, and fat transfer to the hips to create more beautiful results and correct the imperfections.

Before scheduling their procedure, many patients want to know how long they will stay in recovery after abdominoplasty. If we are talking strictly about the period of hospitalization after the tummy tuck, this is often between 4 and 24 hours, depending on the complexity of each case and the postoperative development of the patient. The hospitalization period is often shorter for younger patients with no pre-existing health conditions. Patients with health issues that were known beforehand or more at risk to develop a complication can be required to spend longer in recovery at the hospital.

The period that will be necessary for the patient to be able to resume daily activities and work is no more than two weeks for a vast majority of patients. Again, the length of the recovery can depend on the patient’s ability to follow the plastic surgeon’s instructions.
